“I spent my summers on other projects over rest, and there were times I considered giving up,” the student shared about his journey of pursuing three fields in a conversation with Tuoi Tre Newspaper on June 23, 2024.
During the commencement of the Class of 2024 on June 8, much admiration was directed toward Than Doan Thuan, 22 years old, for graduating with two majors and one minor and achieving a GPA in the top 5%. For Thuan, Computer Science, Economics, and Applied Mathematics were challenging but incredibly rewarding.
However, Thuan’s journey to conquer these three fields was not without difficulties. Computer Science was his passion, and Applied Mathematics was a powerful tool. Economics, however, caused him more hesitation.
Thanks to the first two years at Fulbright, Thuan and his peers could explore various subjects before choosing their majors. During this period, he tested himself with Microeconomics—a “gatekeeper” subject that helped him determine if it was the right fit.
“One key takeaway for me is that I’m never alone. At university, there are always resources available to support students. First and foremost are my friends and professors, from whom I could always learn during and after class.
Teaching assistants and academic advisors are also always ready to help us in need. We as students can leverage these resources to overcome academic challenges,” Thuan said.
