
On the morning of September 23, 2024, local time, during his visit to the United States and attendance at the Future Summit and the 79th UN General Assembly, Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm met with experts and scholars at Columbia University. He witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents between Columbia University, Fulbright University Vietnam, and VinUni University.
At the meeting, delegates assessed that Vietnam has the potential to maintain high economic growth driven by high-tech industries, innovation, and an improved investment environment.
Mr. Thomas Vallely – Senior Advisor on Vietnam at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Fulbright University Vietnam – stated that Vietnam urgently needs to invest in and develop digital infrastructure, particularly in cloud computing and green energy.

In the semiconductor sector, experts praised Vietnam’s development direction in the semiconductor industry, affirming that high-quality human resources are crucial to ensuring a country’s strong position in the global supply chain and that a robust semiconductor ecosystem should be developed based on cooperation between enterprises and educational institutions.
Mr. Scott Andrew Fritzen, President of Fulbright University Vietnam, proposed enhancing traditional educational programs to support students in developing the necessary skills to adapt to rapid technological advancements.
Speaking at the meeting, Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm welcomed the insights, shared commitment, and especially the affection of the experts and scholars for Vietnam.
With new momentum, Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm affirmed that Vietnam is ready for a new historical starting point, a new era of national advancement.
Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm emphasized four major directions in the upcoming economic and social development, which include focusing on building, perfecting, and innovatively synchronizing the institutions for national development; strongly developing science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation to achieve breakthroughs in productivity, quality, effectiveness, and competitiveness of the economy; and continuing to fundamentally and comprehensively innovate education and training, focusing on developing high-quality human resources for priority and emerging sectors.

After the speech, Party General Secretary and State President had a Q&A session with the students and the Columbia University community, facilitated by Professor Nguyễn Thị Liên Hằng.
Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm requested that experts and scholars continue to pay attention, enhance cooperation with Vietnam, especially in research collaboration, policy exchange, and support for the development of science and technology in Vietnam.
In the presence of Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm, Columbia University President Angela Olinto, and attendees, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Đỗ Hùng Việt and Columbia University Executive Vice President Wafaa El-Sadr exchanged a framework memorandum of understanding on cooperation between Columbia University and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
