Conquering the passion for cinema with the short film “The Last Dinner”
With a passion for cinema, Nguyen Duc Nhat, a talented student from the Class of 2024 majoring in Art and Communication Studies, chose to make the short film “The Last Dinner” for his graduation project. This film explores the theme of motherhood relationship, a familiar yet always captivating topic for audiences, through the lens of speculative fiction.
Taking control of a short film for the first time and handling responsibilities from scripting to directing, Nhat couldn’t help feeling anxious and pressured. For him, the most significant obstacles throughout the project were the lack of specialized expertise and limited resources. “I constantly notice my inadequacies every time I encounter a challenge while working on this film project,” he reflected.
Facing the barriers of inadequacy
Despite having experience in various aspects of film production and critique, managing and directing a film crew is a different story. “Feeling insecure is a sign for me to slow down and calmly reflect on what I am doing,” Nhat shared. Instead of being swept away by invisible worries, he decided to slow down to learn and improve. Nhat actively sought practical advice from his predecessors.
“I am extremely fortunate to have such supportive friends and talented supervisors who empathize and assist me,” Nhat expressed his gratitude. With talent and a thirst for learning, Nhat turned his passion for cinema into a meaningful product for his graduation project.
