Over one week trip, our participants had opportunities to explore various facets of Intellectual Property (IP) commercialization, technology (tech) transfer and innovation across different institutions and industries in the U.S.
The visit commenced in Louisville with a warm welcome and an insightful session on IP in the bourbon industry. Participants delved into the critical role of tech transfer offices, exploring partnerships with distilleries and the licensing of IP. The day also featured discussions on updating IP policies in universities and the importance of peer support in tech transfer. Sessions on diversity, equity, and inclusivity initiatives, as well as the expanded role of tech transfer offices, provided valuable insights. The day concluded with a trivia contest and an opening reception of the AUTM 2024 Central Region Meeting.
Day 2 began with a session on the successes and challenges faced by tech transfer offices, followed by a comprehensive overview of administrative, judicial, and legislative matters. Participants also explored collaborative approaches to innovation and IP commercialization. The afternoon sessions highlighted the achievements of leading women inventors and the development of innovation ecosystems. Discussions on startups, recent changes to the Bayh-Dole Act, and AI contributions under new USPTO guidance rounded out the day. The evening concluded with a reception at Fourth Street Live.
The third day featured sessions on hot topics such as Europe’s Unitary Patent and the Amgen vs Sanofi case. Participants learned about public-private partnerships in tech transfer and the programs of Kentucky Commercialization Ventures and Tennessee Technology Advancement Consortium. The working day ended with a group debrief, and a visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, providing a fascinating insight into the creation of baseball bats.
On Day 4, participants traveled to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. The day began with an in-depth look into the workings of the Office of Technology Commercialization and its role in building Kentucky’s innovation ecosystem. The meetings with ElectraMet and representatives from the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering provided insights into the commercialization of academic research. The day concluded with a visit to the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, highlighting the role of tech transfer in agriculture and environmental research.
The final working day took place at the University of Louisville (UofL). Participants were welcomed by the UofL team and received an overview from the Office of Innovation & Technology Transfer.
